📖 About This Game
Dogface is a solitaire WWII tactical combat RPG in which players take on the role of a single U.S. soldier, known as a "dogface" -- a hard-earned nickname given to the infantrymen who fought "their war" on the ground, on foot, through the mud and snow. Taking inspiration from such great games as Advanced Squad Leader, Combat! and the Combat Commander series', and Patton's Best, Dogface seeks to provide the player with the ultimate WWII man-level RPG experience, intentionally restricting combat to little more than the platoon level so as to avoid counter clutter, excessive unit stacking and tracking, and other difficulties. Depending on your chosen historical outfit, your dogface may fight the war in Europe from 1944 to 1945 from the beaches of Normandy, through the hedgerows of France, across the French countryside at breakneck speed in the mad dash towards the Franco-German border, fight to survive in the snowy Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge, cross the Rhine, and join the sweeping advance through a ravaged and devastated Germany, ending the war somewhere within that country, or Austria, or Czechoslovakia. The game is dynamic, with missions, maps, enemy units, and so on generated through a mission generator. Whether a combat mission or patrol mission (combat patrol or recon patrol), your "doggie" will resolve his campaign on a week-by-week basis, suffering platoon casualties, losing comrades, maneuvering around German machine gun nests, tanks, halftracks, and any other myriad of enemy unit type. Along the way, he may earn decorations, awards, and experience. He may become the acting platoon leader through catastrophic losses, or he may be the platoon leader by default as a Lieutenant (2d or 1st). His fellow "doughs" may come to like or despise him, and his commanding officer (CO) may trust him or loathe him, depending on his performance. His ultimate goal, of course, is to survive World War II in Europe and return home, one way or another.
Dogface includes comprehensive rules, tables and missions books; a player character information sheet; two mats to track in-mission and in-patrol statistics; three counter sheets including soldiers, machine guns, bazookas, tanks, halftracks, radios, flamethrowers, and so on; seven combat calendars following the historical path of seven chosen units throughout their tenure in World War II in Europe (specifically, the 1st, 2d, 8th, 66th, and 80th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 4th Armored Division and 82d Airborne Division); and fifteen different maps representing hills, "Omaha" beach, rural areas, towns, urban areas, and woods.
Dogface requires two six-sided (d6) dice to play, and may be (but is not required) enhanced by taking notes and keeping a log on a separate sheet of paper, or digitally with any free word-like program, as your soldier's story develops.
