How this game works - core systems and player actions

📖 About This Game

In Spelling Bee, players roll a set of custom letter dice and race against the clock to create words. The game rewards not just quick thinking but also careful word construction, as letters come in both black and red values. Black letters earn one point each, while red letters are worth three, and the “Qu” face worth 2 points. With every round, the dice return to the center, and the contest begins anew. The standard rules of Spelling Bee are designed for smaller groups of two to four players. Each round, participants draft dice from a central pool before attempting to form the longest valid word possible within a set time limit. Once a die is used in a word, it is removed from play until the round ends, limiting the options available for players who follow. Words may be challenged for accuracy, and a successful challenge forces the challenged player to return all of their dice to the center, earning no points. This version emphasizes deliberate choices, tactical timing, and the tension of one player’s word shaping the next player’s possibilities. The second ruleset, Spelling Bee Showdown, expands the game for up to eight players and shifts the pace. In this version, everyone plays simultaneously, combining their two personal dice with ten shared dice in the center. Players may re-roll their personal dice at a point cost before the timer starts, introducing a strategic push-your-luck element. Once play begins, all participants write as many words as they can within the time limit, racing to squeeze value from both common and high-scoring letters. At its core, Spelling Bee is a contest of words shaped by the roll of the dice and the urgency of the timer. The standard game highlights careful sequencing and individual turns, while the Showdown variant thrives on simultaneous action and lively competition. When the final round ends, the player with the highest score claims victory and the title of Spelling Bee Champion! —description from the publisher Spelling Bee is a word dice game.
